| INLAND ENERGY, SILVERTON
I'd been over to the Gallery many times to paint at night, but not with somebody else working inside. Our Son was framing. It looked great, I had not painted my Gallery in almost 15 years, so began a set of studies, the painting took almost a month to complete.
I've kept it.
The characters in the toilet are Chris Fraser (husband of the Publican) and Trevor Clare, Grazier from nearby Limestone Station.
The painting reflects the mostly good energy that comes from living in a tiny remote (47 people) village. We make our own fun, have an occaisional war between ourselves, celebrate our sucesses with excesses, and get on with it.

THE MESSENGER

It was the desription of a war time story by Wally Ford (born Broken Hill 1918) that bought this work into being. On a visit to my studio, Wally commented,"This room hasn't changed since 1939, Checker Vaughan and me had a cuppa right there, the day we both left to go and fight." Wally returned to the mines, then went on to own Taxis, he was a lay historian, didn't speak of the war much, but liked to tell of Broken Hill's unique role in it. His mate, a telegraph boy, would deliver messages from the Defence Department up until 10pm.
For Families with sons and daughters away serving, 10pm was the end of the emotional day.

By 1905 the population of Silverton had shrunk from 3,000 to less than 100, the Dioceses abandoned St. Carthage in the sixties.
I often thought about the young priest who planted the Church in our harsh environment, his flock of lambs are on the distant hill.

The pidgeons had claimed the once sacred space, their droppings white in the wheel barrow, to feed nearby shrubs.
Pews along the walls. Feather doona and pillows, chattering generator into the night.

The Summer storm clouds move through to the East, 'Return Empties" like bottles, Colin McLeod the prior Publican once called them. If we are lucky Broken Hill may get a bit and send it down the creek, back here.
Then the late Sun as it finishes its day lights the place up for just a few minutes, Silverton's a pretty place when that happens.
